Human being can be very complex. No wonder man always look out for complex solution to his problems. Unfortunately, this does not always follow. There are several issues which look complex but which requires a simple solution.
As human, simple solution does not always seem right. Politics to a simple mind can be so difficult to understand. One’s minds keep roaming around. Why does it seem impossible to have a society free of rancour, dispute and division? Wherever there is resources, power and other scarce resources, politics finds its way into the equation. Many politicians around the world understand all these fears and used it against their people.
Coming to Nigeria, Africa and other developing world, a trend is noticed. Development seems elusive. Based on this, the writer did a thought provoking research on issues of Nigeria, politics, Politicians and why development is elusive.
My finding is eye opening. This piece is therefore my take away from a paper ‘What is Politics’. First, we discovered according to an online writer that politics to many has the image of trouble, disruptions and even violence in one hand and deceit, manipulations and lies on the other. It is therefore not new that this perception affect the disposition of many towards politics. With these inset, many decent People will not even come close.
Tse Tung also sees politics as war without bloodshed and war as politics with bloodshed. Unfortunately, there have been several bloodshed in the course of people playing politics. Since many great people are avowed to bloodshed, they will rather stay clear. Politics according to Machiavellian approach is often used in perjorative sense where people place priority on expediency over morality.
They therefore assume that politics belongs to those practising duplicity in statecraft and in general conduct. For what we have seen, politics in Nigeria and Africa is majorly play by many without tract record of achievement in their private lives before coming to public service. No wonder then Robert Stevenson concludes ‘politics is the only profession for which preparation is not thought necessary’.Since this is supposed to be true, Politics according to George Orwell ‘is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatreds and schizophrenia’ No one is thought how to lie or hate hence why the need for preparation. With these perception, does it surprise anyone if developing Countries’ politics is not promoting or enhancing quality of life and development? Our Politicians here too are not helping matters.
They play to the gallery. They seem to follow a pattern. They compromise their values and breath compromise. In actual fact they seem to fit Dick Gregory’ definition which says ‘A politician is a skilled person in the art of compromise. Usually an elected official who has compromised to get nominated, compromised to get elected and compromised to stay in office’.
A further understanding of politicians here can be better understood by Ambrose Bierce’s position which defines Politics(Politicians in this instance as people who) strife (for personal) interests but are masquerading it as contests of principles’. No wonder it is assumed in politics there are no permanent enemies but permanent interest.
What have we not seen here? Our Politicians cross carpet to a different political platform at will without due consideration for its philosophy as long as their personal interest, fortune will be assured or protected. Many politicians will therefore lay down the lives of the citizenry than their own if that is necessary to achieve their goals. If this Is not so, how come we see lives of political stooges, thugs been wasted in political clashes. Yet politicians will escape unhurt. Henry Miller position on this capture our thought. Miller claimed ‘to put properly, one has to be a murderer to be a politician, ready and willing to see people sacrificed, slaughtered, for the sake of an idea, whether a good one or a bad one’.
With these prevalent perception and behaviours within Nigeria Politics and among politicians, does it still surprise anyone why we are where we are? Why in the real sense Politics in its broadest sense should be the activity through which people make, preserve and amend the general rules under which they rule – Heywood.
No wonder, Vaclaw Havel was of the position ‘Politics worthy of the name and the only politics I am willing to devote myself to is simply a matter of serving those around us:serving the Comunity and serving those who come after us. It’s deepest root are moral because it is a responsibility expressed through action’.
If Nigeria and Africa must develop then:
Politics must not be left in the hand of Politicians: anyone who calls himself a professional politician therefore should be avoided or voted out of office. It is obvious, real change agents are not our regular politician. It is safe to conclude with Frank Hubbard when he said ‘we would all like to vote for the best man but he is never a candidate’. What we do in politics or election then is making a choice among several devils. Real corporate professionals should become candidates.
Real, tested professionals must change their perception of politics: leaving professional politicians to continue the game of Nigeria Politics will diminish the value of average Nigerian the more. We must develop a new perception about politics which is an ethical activities by which human can create a just society.
