During the tenure of the former NAFDAC boss, Prof. Dora Akunyili, as the minister of information, she embarked on the re-branding Nigeria project; a project aimed at inspiring patriotism. The re-branding Nigeria project popularized the slogan; Nigeria- good people, great nation.
As an individual, I believe in affirmative confessions; I believe that our confessions through our thoughts moulds our reality and I’m also of the belief that affirmative confessions without actions will most likely yield null result just as it is illustrated in the bible; faith without work is dead. Popularizing a slogan to inspire patriotism in people without any concrete acts to restore hope in them is like the case of a fellow that is expecting to harvest mangoes on his land but never planted a mango seed on it.
Of what benefit is the re-branding Nigeria project when our leaders pays lip service to the development of this nation and at the same time milking the masses dry. What does a government that once said theft is not corruption have to offer inspiring patriotism?
The Nigerian Immigration service (NIS) recruitment scam left more than 17 people dead nationwide and several injured. The minister of interior, Comrade Abba Moro, who is yet to be relieved of his post or summon to court due to the NIS recruitment tragedy is yet to refund the 1000 naira application fee to more than 700,000 applicants who applied for the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) posts even after the federal government authorized the refund.
The collection of toll fee on the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge which was built using tax payers’ money was declared illegal by the Federal High Court, Lagos, as there is no law backing such collection in Lagos state. Lagos state governments continue exploiting the masses through the collection of the toll fee. This is a case of law makers having no respect for the rule of law.
20 billion dollars disappeared from NNPC account and is yet to be found even after forensic audit; 9.3 million dollar was recently intercepted by South Africa government from two Nigerians and an isreali on laundering ground; the 32.5 billion police pension scam; the winner of the recently conducted gubernatorial election in Ekiti state has ongoing court case for financial misappropriation and was allowed to contest for a political post. Nigeria currently lacks good governance and only good governance can inspire true patriotism in people.
Our value system needs to be revisited as a nation and there is also need for our leaders to imbibe accountability and transparency into the affairs of this nation while also upholding the rule of law. A good image at home will reflect us better to the world.
Happy Independence Day Nigeria!
